I found a wonderful article in the September issue of Real Simple entitled "Artful Ideas For Every Room" filled with charming, and unexpected ideas, of how to use art and photography to add character to a space and not just fill in the blank spots.
* Floor to ceiling schemes work well with themed groupings: black and white family photos, children's artwork, neutral prints. I love, love, love the fantastic mix of antique frames used here!
* Why hang everything? With a piece this big it is effortless to simply prop it against the wall. Look how it makes the silver chair sparkle with complete cool.
* Create a gallery wall that is all lined up along the bottom edges of their frames creating a crisp horizontal plane. To keep the composition fresh and sophisticated hang frames low in relationship to the sofa. This is the perfect approach when you have a modern, cleanly lined sofa.
* Sentimental favorites are wonderful all nestled tightly together in one, single row. I love that the subjects and styles of images vary but the subject matter rings consistently throughout. And I equally love how the frames butt up together, overlapping at times. It reminds me of how we move together through life. This composition would be equally as playful used in a long vertical line.
* We often hang or present artwork in a horizontal fashion. To mix it up, I love using a "series" in vertical spaces. As shown above, it highlights the soaring ceiling and draws great attention to the room's architecture. If you've got it, why not flaunt it?!
* I think the last image is utterly darling. They have turned an awkward space between two windows into an inviting nook simply by pulling up a chaise and hanging two mismatched oils above it. This would only be successful in narrow spaces but how sweetly it works here!
