Fudgy Wudgy

When my daughter came home after school with her friend, she said we had "no good food", meaning no junk food. HA! She then kindly asked me to make some brownies for them to eat, after dinner of course :)

It turned out pretty good for using an old oven that SUCKS!!! I am going oven shopping this weekend. I definitely want a convection oven...any recommendations?

Back to the brownie/cake/yumminess....I usually don't take chances with baking, so I was thumbing through my cookbooks. Of course the Rebar cookbook is one of my favorites. Everything in the book always turns out great, and this was no exception.

I have had my hardship with vegan brownie making.sometimes they just don't taste good. Too oily or crunchy or something just doesn't taste right. But this one....if you love chocolate you won't be disappointed.

I hope everyone is having a lovely week. I am on leave for a few days and will return next week. Please come back soon for more things I think are simply fantastic!
Best, Nichole

Mary McDonald: The Allure of Style

Like so many I have been counting the days until the release of Mary McDonald’s first book The Allure of Style. Now the wait is over! Mary’s exquisitely photographed book includes her own refurbishment of Buster Keaton’s legendary villa, as well as an extraordinary range of client projects.

Mary’s flair for combining old-fashioned elegance with bold patterns, chinoiserie and contemporary style is second to none. Vibrant color and whimsical designs, married with an impeccable sense of style is evident on every page. This book is a must for any design library.

A very special thank you to Mary for including me in the acknowledgments. Unnecessary, but very much appreciated. Mary you are the best.

Pumpkin love and lasagna!

pumpkin lasagna

My favorite time of year...Autumn. The crisp air, fall colours, my birthday and Halloween! I picked up a pumpkin at the end of the elderly couples driveway the other day with hopes to make a soup or something? Then I was surfing for pumpkin ideas and I came across a pumpkin lasagna. It sounded like a great way to prepare it. So I thought I would give it a whirl...

The sauce is a basic tomato sauce but instead of oregano I used sage, it smells like thanksgiving dinner.

sliced pumpkin, sprinkled with sea salt and freshly ground pepper, drizzled with olive oil and roasted
layers of pumpkin & fresh cilantro

pour some tomato sauce on top

layer of tofu ricotta
Roasted pumpkin
1/2 small pumpkin-peeled, cored and sliced
sea salt
freshly ground pepper
olive oil

spread pumpkin in a layer on a greased baking sheet, drizzle with olive oil and season.
bake at 375 for 20 minutes or until soft.

Tofu ricotta

1 pkg soft tofu
1 tbsp lemon juice
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/4 cup nutritional yeast
sea salt
freshly ground pepper

Mix everything in a bowl until it resembles ricotta.

I like pumpkin seeds so I kept mine and toasted them in the oven with the roasting pumpkin. Grind them up and sprinkled them on top of the lasagna. There is so many recipes with pumpkin, and they make great lanterns too!

Black bean Tostada

I love Mexican type food. It always seems so fresh and healthy, which is something I strive to feed my family with. I started with some black beans and went from there. The avocado cream is something new and wanted to do a little experiment with.

Speaking of experiments...I got this amazing book at the library. ALINEA. It is a cookbook from the famous Chicago restaurant. I was excited when I checked my email this morning and it said it was ready for me to pick up. This book...the pictures are a work of art! The pictures are SO beautiful, its hard to believe it is food. If you have a good library, I recommend you check this book out. Its not vegan, but man...it is unbelievable where food has come.

Back on topic both my blenders are broken. The big glass one broke because I left a fork in it when I turned it on and it broke the glass. My hand blender I broke this evening when I was mushing up the beans I had it plugged into the stove top outlet, and the cord rested on a hot burner. There was a HUGE spark and the lights flickered through out the house. I am mad at myself because both of these "accidents" could of been prevented. ARGH!  I guess I will be mushing beans by hand for now...

This was super simple to make and made the family happy which is always a +.

2 tbsp olive oil
1 onion- small diced
3 cloves garlic-minced
1 1/2 cups black beans
1 small tomato- chopped
1 tsp oregano
1 tsp chili powder
1 tsp cumin powder
3/4 cup water
sea salt

In a medium sized pot heat oil, add onion and garlic. Saute until soft. Add spices stir to coat onions. Add beans, water and tomato. Bring to a boil and let simmer for 15 minutes. Puree and season to taste

For the tostada part I used a cast iron pan heated it up and placed a flour tortilla on it. Let it sit on the heat for a minute or two and then flip it.

Profile: Kevin Isbell

As a general rule, I like to write profiles on people who I have met or have had a chance to speak with a great length. I feel as though I can write a much stronger and personal profile if we’ve had a chance to sit down together and exchange ideas and stories. That said, when my friend Elizabeth Blitzer introduced me to the work of Kevin Isbell I knew that I had to learn more about him and his work.

Kevin founded his New York based design firm in 2009. And while his firm may be young, he is no stranger to the world of interior design. A native of Ohio, Kevin earned degrees in both Business Management and Art History at Ohio State University before moving to San Francisco to pursue his life long passion for design. After graduating from the Academy of Art with a degree in Interior Architecture and Design, he began working for the renowned California designer Orlando Diaz-Azcuy.

After relocating to New York City in 2001 he became the Senior Designer for Celeste Copper, working on projects from Pied-a-Terre apartments to Palm Beach estates, as well as a coveted room in the Kips Bay Decorator Showhouse in 2002.

In early 2005 he joined Bilhuber & Associates as Design Director. In the four years he worked with Bilhuber Kevin managed numerous projects in the Hamptons, Nantucket and the Caribbean.

What I admire most is his highly curated and edited style. The interiors come across as fun, not fussy. I also like the way he weaves unique objects into his rooms, never giving in to over-decoration.

I will be in NYC the week of October 4 and will finally have a chance to meet Kevin in person. I look forward to learning more about his passion for creating artful and interesting living spaces.

How would you describe your personal style?
Collected and unexpected. I like to mix high and low. A great pair of shoes, with Levis. I find it much more interesting to find stylish pieces at every price point. I approach my design in the same manner.

What is your most prized possession
?
Although not exactly a possession, I would have to say my Basenji’s, Simon and Rita. I wish everyone in my life were as excited to see me walk through the door.

What is your idea of earthly happiness?
Being surrounded by people and things that I love. My New York City apartment is full of things that I love or represent someone special. From a clock given to me by my father, or a shell I picked up on the beach, it all comes together to tell my story.

What is the one thing in life you cannot live without
?
My integrity

What inspires your creativity and designs?
My design is a highly personalized process which I view as storytelling. I try to inject the client’s personality into the space to tell the story that is their life. For example, I have a client who is smitten with Napoleon. For her dressing room, I have lined all the drawers and closet interiors in a Napoleonic bee patterned wallpaper. It’s a special touch that only she experiences.

Who are your style icons
?
Axel Vervordt, Yves St Laurent, Jacques Grange, Billy Baldwin, Albert Hadley.

Who would you most like to collaborate with on a project?
I would love to collaborate with the sculptor Richard Serra. His pieces have a quiet, subtle strength in their simplicity.

What books are currently on your bedside table?
A first edition copy of the 70’s monograph of Syrie Maughman which I just scored on eBay for next to nothing, Leo and His Circle, the autobiography of gallerist Leo Castelli, and the ubiquitous stack of shelter magazines, naturally

What is your favorite luxury in life?
Freshly ironed sheets.

Past or present who has most influenced your direction in life?
In every major life changing moment there has been someone who helped influence and guide me through that change. I believe that people are brought into our lives at certain times to teach us a lesson. Currently, that would be my partner, Patrick.

{curb appeal} The Perfect Entry

In response to the wonderful emails I received after my recent staging post I wanted to dedicate some time towards answering some of your great questions. I decided to add a monthly section entitled {curb appeal} which will focus on what many of you wanted to know- what can you do as a homeowner to add instant appeal to your own home in a great, casually chic fashion.

Enhancing your entry is a fantastic way to create a welcoming and appealing home. Simple ideas such as adding decorative accents are not only pleasing updates but are easy to do yourself. Things I love using in entryways: two perfectly positioned sidelights flanking the front door, urns filled with seasonal plantings (*tip: if urns aren't your style, a well selected group of pots with varying heights will work as a great option), an overhead lantern if there are no sidelights, style appropriate house numbers (*tip: remember to coordinate your lockset, door knob and knocker finishes collectively), a fresh black, white or red door (or a custom wood door), a wreath that reflects your home's personality, molding around the sides and top of your doorway to make the door pop with architectural interest, a distinctive chair or bench with a pretty accent pillow, a beautiful welcome mat, stone pavers as a walkway rather than a concrete path, a simple row of flower pots lining your entry path (*tip: coordinate the color of the pots and plantings with your home's exterior), highlighting stairs with lanterns, topiaries or planters. The smallest touches can transform your home from ordinary to fantastic in just a small amount of time!
