{idea notebook} Artful Arranging

There is almost nothing I love more than staging a space. I love watching objects begin to layer and collect and transform into something artful. But worry not, achieving these gorgeous displays is often easier than you might think...
Successful displays pull together items through composition and palette and are a seamless mix of objects that are beautiful, quirky and full of character. Don't try to match pieces or make things perfectly symmetrical. Too much of anything often reads as stuffy and overly formal. Your goal is to keep the eye moving in an easy rhythm: horizontal to vertical to a pause moment of space, and so on. A great trick to remember when staging a scene is opposites often work perfectly together. For example when placing a ceramic or glass vessel introduce something rough into your display as its counterpoint. (The same idea works with tall and short, smooth and rough.) Group things in odd numbers (3 is a magic number) as it will add visual balance to your composition. I love exposing wood, natural fiber, and organic elements to add richness and texture into the palette. And not everything that is framed must hang, leaning and layering items creates a wonderfully casual quality. And to complete your arrangement, try throwing in one object, pattern or color that is slightly "off"- it will provide an odd pop of interest and make your display much more modern. Welcome back and have a wonderful week everyone!
