EARLY AMERICAN-INSPIRED KITCHEN | SCREENSHOT: PERIODARCHITECTURELTD.COM
Just today I stumbled across the portfolio of Period Architecture, Ltd. of West Chester, Pennsylvania. The firm "draws on the classic building traditions of the Delaware Valley for inspiration in creating thoughtful designs." I posted a few screenshots from the firm's website, but unfortunately, their galleries (right now) are organized by "exteriors" and "interiors" rather than individual projects (so I can't provide much information). Nonetheless, the photos exemplify the style and craftsmanship of their beautiful work. Read more at InspiredHomeDesign.NET...

I have to thank Holly at Things That Inspire for featuring the brand-new website of Atlanta-based interior designer, Jackye Lanham. Ms. Lanham's work embodies the elegance and grace of the South, while still maintaining a sense of livability.

This charming kitchen, for example, feels vintage, but still so fresh. I love the kitchen table in its center, as well as the seatcushions atop the surrounding chairs; and the plates, in their antique finish, grouped around the stainless steel hood provide a wonderful accent. THE BEAUTIFUL KITCHEN SERIES #2: INES LOMBARDI OF OSBORNE CABINETS & MILLWORK IN HOUSTON, TEXAS

beautiful kitchen, winner of Sub-Zero design award, kitchen and bath ideas, white kitchen

Check out this amazing kitchen by Ines Lombardi of Osborne Cabinets & Millwork in Houston, Texas. Ms. Lombardi won a regional award in the Sub-Zero/Wolf design competition for her spectacular work.

Notice the subtle color painted inside the cabinetry, which really highlight the serving pieces and glassware on display.

What we love about this kitchen:
  • The creamy white cabinetry, high ceiling and wooden beams, which add warmth to the room
  • The copper pendant lighting above the kitchen island, which complements the cookware prominently displayed against the tiled wall
  • The great wall space around the cooking area -- the entire wall is tiled and Ms. Lombardi chose not to install upper cabinets in this section of the room
  • The mix of countertop materials: stainless steel, marble, and even dark wooden countertops
  • The kitchen island with its beautiful slab of polished marble and rich, dark wood
  • The separate stainless steel refrigerator and freezer units by Sub-Zero Appliances
  • The entire wall of glass front cabinetry -- the contrast of the exterior cabinetry and the painted interior -- a lovely sea-green, which really draws the eye to the serving pieces on display
  • The slate floors -- a very practical alternative to hardwood, which can scratch all too easily
  • The stainless steel range hood against the tiled wall

The first firm in our spotlight is Kitchens by Deane, with showrooms in Stamford and New Canaan, Connecticut.  They first came across our radar when they won the regional award in the 2008/2009 Sub-Zero/Wolf Kitchen Design Contest.  We've posted a screenshot of their award-winning design as well as an additional photo from Moffly Media; however, we encourage you to visit the Kitchens by Deane website to view more of their impressive portfolio.

The first design features exquisite woodwork.  Some of our favorite features: Gorgeous painted white cabinetry, a center island with rich wooden countertops and glass pendant lamps, beautiful hardwood floors, glass-front cabinets, which add interest to the kitchen design...

"New Old House" Kitchens by Barbara Herr...

I decided to highlight some of my favorite kitchen sources today.  We'll start with Barbara Herr Kitchens of Marietta, Pennsylvania.

For anyone restoring a period home, perhaps a farmhouse, or building a "new old house," especially with early American influences, you'll really love her work.  You can find out more information, and view more of her portfolio at www.barbaraherrkitchens.com.

I love the ceiling beams and countertops and the backsplash, which appear to be soapstone.  I also love the slate floors.  While hardwood floors are beautiful, there's no question that slate is easier to clean and much more durable, especially with pets and kids!

This kitchen is so spacious -- and the windows let in so much light.  I also love the dark panes of the windows against the creamy white cabinetry and walls...

For those who are interested in the concept of the "keeping room" within the kitchen, this is fantastic.  The fireplace adds such warmth to the room...

This is another beautiful example of an updated farmhouse kitchen.  I love the glass storage / display cabinet on the right, which looks like a piece of fine furniture.

Again, the glass display cabinet and the wall of windows, which let in so much light.  Here she uses some warmer tones.  Notice the stone wall...

Notice the colonial colors and the fireplace in this kitchen, which really make it feel authentic.  If you're restoring a period home or building a "new old house," a design like the one above really creates a sense of place.

One lucky winner won the $3.6 mil Princess Margaret Welcome Home Show Home designed by Lynda Reeves & team of Canadian House and Home...

Yesterday, The Princess Margaret Welcome Home Sweepstakes for Cancer Research officially concluded.  One lucky winner won the $3.6 million shingle-style home, which was inspired by Nancy Meyers' blockbuster film, "Something's Gotta Give." A $100 ticket bought Canadian residents a chance to win the show home, "built from the ground up by Lynda Reeves and her H&H design team."

If you didn't have an opportunity to tour the home,

you can still get a glimpse inside this Hamptons-inspired dream house.  Room-by-room tours, courtesy of the talented Ms. Reeves, are posted on the Canadian House & Home website.  Click here, or visit www.houseandhome.com for more details.

HERLONG & ASSOCIATES: Specializing in Coastal Architecture & Interior Design

We normally select a few photos to showcase the work of our favorites architects, interior designers and custom home builders; however, in the case of the South Carolina based architecture firm of Herlong and Associates, the process was extremely difficult.  With such an impressive body of work, how can one decide?

In the end, we decided on the Wild Dunes beach house below, but you can visit the Herlong and Associates' website at www.herlongarchitects.com to view their entire portfolio online.

"For this Charlotte, NC based family their Wild Dunes beach house needed to be a combination of classic cottage comfortable and sophistication without being stuffy. The end result is large outdoor living and entertaining spaces combined with a smooth transition to the vast, neutral interior." -- Herlong & Associates
