William Yeoward's Georgian Guest Cottage

I have long been a fan of acclaimed British designer William Yeoward. His style and interiors are always marked by subtle sophistication, easy elegance and creative charm. Certainly in the UK, Yeoward is star in the world of fine home furnishings, crystal, linens, fabric, lighting, sterling flatware and English bone china.

His book William Yeoward on Entertaining is one of my favorites. In my tower of magazines I still have a dog-eared copy of Southern Accents featuring a dinner Yeoward held at the home of designer Suzanne Rheinstein. In fact, every year around the holidays, I think of his advice, “When it comes to holidays I don’t experiment. Traditions can be very reassuring. I love the fact that things are tried and tested and work."

Yeoward’s Georgian guest cottage is a testament to his wisdom and genius. After the renovation of his country home left him seriously lacking in guest bedrooms he decided to convert a small unattractive building in the garden. I love that the ground floor is unified in 'Hortense Gold' wallpaper from the designer’s own collection. It gives the cottage such a cozy feeling. It’s has been said that he takes great pride in insisting that the guesthouse is a complete fake and reproduction from start to finish. With results such as this, I would boast too!

The ground floor of the cottage is one large living space with the staircase acting as the central divide.

I love the cheerful Babes chair covered in orange antique velvet and trimmed in yellow.

Hortense Gold wallpaper and fabric in the same colorway.

A chair upholstered in Yeoward 'Poincare Paprika' marries with gold tone walls.

Old Freinds and More...

First a huge thank you to everyone for all of the emails and well wishes over the weekend, I am truly touched. I am feeling much better — thank you. I spent most of the weekend curled up with a cup of tea and a stack of books. For me, books are like old friends; they are always there to comfort and delight when you need it the most.

I was once again charmed by Jeffrey Bilhuber’s book Defining Luxury. I love that he views luxury as essential to every life well lived, a way of appreciating and sharing our joy in existence—so true!

Whenever I am in New York I stay at 70 Park Avenue, designed by Jeffrey Bilhuber. It feels very much like my own little Park Avenue pied à terre. Not only are the rooms well appointed, but also the guests are served complimentary wine in the living room each night. And even better, it’s an affordable stay by New York standards.
