{idea notebook+furniture transformations} Decoupage Chairs

I love using the traditional technique of decoupaging to transform old furniture. It's funky and fresh and completely inexpensive! Try using newspapers and maps for their incredible graphic images or vintage wallpaper for their amazing patterns and color. Just Fabulous!

Step 1:
Sand wood until smooth and clean surface carefully.

Step 2:
Using a glue that will dry clear, apply a thin layer of adhesive to both sides of your paper strips and the surface that you will be applying to. Press clippings flat onto the chair, beginning at the center and working your way out, squeezing out any excess with cloth and popcicle stick. Remove any wrinkles in the paper. Wait 3-5 minutes and repeat this step all over the chair creating your desired pattern.

Step 3:
Wait another 3-5 minutes until the glue begins to set. Prepare a mixture of 3 parts glue to one part water. Brush on a thin coat of this mixture and allow it to dry thoroughly. Continue to add coats of diluted glue until you achieve the desired effect. Remember to let each coat dry completely before adding another coat of glue.

Step 4:
Once glue sets, apply a coat of gloss enamel, varnish or polyurethane over the chair and allow to dry. Apply enough coats to completely cover the surface and smooth all of the edges.
